On August 13, 2024 the ministry of agriculture of Lower Saxony officially welcomed the project “WassKli” from Ostfalia University of Applied Sciences in Suderburg into the “EIP Agri Network”. The object of the project is the development of water reservoir as well as management strategies to answer the challenges of the climate change. The timeframe of the project is set till end of June 2027. The government funding supports cooperative innovation projects, which sets impulse for a competitive, regenerative and animal friendly agriculture and food industry. The goal of the funding is to innovate and improve knowledge exchange between sience and agriculture practice.

The research project “WassKli” covers different key aspects. On the one hand, there is the development of concepts for artificial and natural water reservoirs. On the other hand, there is the evaluation of usage of the use of alternative water resources, such as drainage water and cleaned water from wastewater treatment plants. The primary interest of the experts in the agricultural industry in Lower Saxony during drought periods due to climate change, with the goal of minimizing loss of harvest goods.

The project ist realized by experts from various disciplines who work togehter on it. Two companies, Elxlebener Feldfrucht KG and Steinicke – Haus der Hochlandgewürze GmbH, provide valuable information from their experience. The startup “Agvolution GmbH” supports the project by monitoring ground and water temperatures. Expertise gets complemented through “Kreisverband der Wasser- und Bodenverbände Uelzen”. They will provide solutions regarding water management and distribution. A research team from the INBW will coordinate and lead the project.

In summary, the project objectives are as follows:

->Determination of the potential of alternative water resources for agricultural usage/irrigation

->Determination of water quality and preparation measures for the agricultural industry

->Dimensioning of a water reservoir

->Development of an optimized management stragey for the usage of reserved/saved water for fiel irrigation

The project’s findings will result in a manual/guideline, called a Leitfaden, that is in line with current irrigation practices.
